The BlackBerry Diaries - With Giveaway

There are few things I enjoy as much as curling up on the couch with a great book, being able to just fall into a storyline and lose myself for a period of time - it's true, I've been known to be *mia* for hours on end - I have the messy house to prove it! Some books take me right in and others are just fun and easygoing reads that are plain and simply enjoyable. Where I can't put it down because I am just having fun reading it. The BlackBerry Diaries: Adventures in Modern Motherhood is just that kind of a book for me. Written blog style, the BlackBerry Diaries is like the *journal* of Kathy Bucksworth, on her life after her beloved BlackBerry (*Seamus*) joined her family. Yes, similar to a child being born, Kathy goes through all the same *issues* a new mother would - particularly a first timer. 

(from the back of her book) The relationship between a BlackBerry and its owner is not unlike that of a mother and her newborn baby, says Kathy in her book. Ever since her husband could not put down his own BlackBerry, Buckworth decided to see what all the fuss was about. So she bought a shiny black one -- to match her shoes -- and named it Seamus. "No one can truly explain what it's like to have a real, live baby in your house, and no one could really describe the transformative moment when I held that adorable little thing in my arms (okay, fingers) for the first time," Buckworth writes. Her book is about the joys and drawbacks of owning a smart-phone, mixed with musings about parenthood. Buckworth explains phantom vibrations (dubbed "BraxBerry Hicks"), which any true "BlackBerrian" recognizes as the moment when you've think you've received an email and then, if in front of people, you have to read a blank screen to save face.

I found myself nodding and chuckling to myself many times throughout this book, but not because I've been there....you see, I read this book on the other side of the fence so to speak. I am not a BlackBerry owner, in fact - not just that, but I don't even have a cell phone *gasp* and my texting skills are nothing short of horrendous. But I know (and perhaps this is why I'll avoid getting a blackberry - though I secretly really want a pink one and can't say I won't succumb to the temptation) that there is a high possibility that this would be me as a result of getting one. The computer already demands so much of my time (self inflicted mainly), I can only imagine if I had access to it ALL.THE.TIME. In fact, our laptop kind of went on the fritz about a month before Christmas, and although I miss it, it's been a blessing in disguise (I now have to trudge ALL the way downstairs to the desktop *sigh*). 

That being said - there are soooo many benefits to having this kind of access. It's really a balance...one not easily found. Written with humour, wit, and a bold and unapologetic honesty, Kathy's comparison between adding a new child and getting a BlackBerry Smart Phone (BBSP) definitely had my attention. Her writing style (real, fresh, and oh so funny) offers a great escape from those often mundane days - you'll be passing this book along to friends and family to share in a great laugh...Really, an enjoyable read. I'll be keeping this one on my bookshelf for sure and am definitely going to check out her other books!

Soap Nuts - with Giveaway

It seems more and more *green* products are being marketed - body products, clothing, and cleaners to name a few. I'm always looking for new *better for the environment* products - they also tend to be *better for us* too which is an added bonus. I don't know if it means I've been living under some sort of rock, but I had never even heard of Soap Nuts before the opportunity to review them from this company came up. Not only am I up for anything, but particularly when it comes to trying out a new *natural* product - I was totally game.

Soap nuts are small berry like fruits that grow in warm, tropical and sultry climates. They are native to India, Nepal and some other South Asian countries and consist of a small yellowish Brown fruit covered by a hard outer covering. It is the former that is mostly used in the various products that are now available in the market. The main ingredient in soap nuts is saponins which make them an excellent cleaning utility that can be used to clean almost everything ranging from clothes to dishes and regular household cleaning. 

Erin, from Buy Soap Nuts was generous enough to offer a 500g bag of Soap Nuts and a Coconut Coir Fiber Scrub Pad. I can't lie - at first glance they look at little *odd* and my first *sniff* didn't really encourage the need to use them. Okay it wasn't that bad, it was similar in my opinion to vinegar - which we all know is a great product to use in cleaning. I read the back to find out how to use these and discovered several uses for them. They aren't just for laundry (which was what I originally thought) but can also be *cooked* down into a cleaning liquid. I wanted to try that - and am happy to report there was no vineger smell (though I expected there to be). In fact, It doesn't really even have a smell - which lets you know it's also going to be safe and gentle on your skin. No rubber gloves here (though if I got a cute pink pair, I just might wear them anyways.). In fact - the list of uses for Soap Nuts is baffling to me and so unbelievably great. Not only can you use it for laundry and as a cleaner (windows, mirrors, counters, etc), but you can also make your own toothpaste as well as using it for handsoap. For those with allergies or perfume sensitivities, this product is perfect. The Soap is also famous as a medicinal ingredient. In fact, soap nuts have had a long and successful track record for treating several skin conditions effectively. Totally natural and gentle, these soap nuts are wonderful for the skin and don't cause any side effects when used to treat skin ailments - they work wonders to relieve problems such as eczema and psoriasis.

I wasn't trying this product so much to see if it was *better* than my regular chemically overloaded cleaners...but rather, to see if it was *just as good*. If I'm going to make a switch to something natural I want to make sure it's, at the very least, an adequate replacement. In all honesty - based on the simple fact that Soap Nuts has such a long list of uses, I say it's better hands down. And yes of course - it does just as good of a job as the *chemically overloaded* products (I'd venture to say even a better job). And there's something to be said about the peace of mind in knowing you haven't just wiped down your child's table, or toys, or the kitchen counter with a bunch of chemicals. Soap Nuts are 100% natural and 100% safe. And many have commented on the quality of these Soap Nuts in comparison with other suppliers.

I am really excited to test these for all their uses. Next up - I'm going to take the laundry challenge. I will of course report back on that and the other uses I test out over the Christmas holidays. The great thing about this bag - 500g - is that for only $22, it's going to last a while. To make the liquid I used I think 10 Soap Nuts and you can't even tell I've taken any out. It's not like a bag of chips where you pay for 500g but get 10g worth of chips and 490g worth of air...These Soap Nuts are crammed in and you will not be disappointed!

Monday Mingle...On Tuesday - again! LOL

* I hate vacuuming - and rarely do it (and am so grateful for a husband who does it!!!)

* I have an *X* on my right arm - yes carved there....by a friend...stupid story really - he asked if he could and I couldn't think of a reason to say no (can't quite figure out how the *cutting an x into my arm* didn't raise a red flag)...so he did...with his jackknife - no not sanitized...and because I know you're wondering - No, I don't have any diseases as a result. And yes, I do consider myself lucky. LOL

* I have always wanted a turtle or frog tattoo on my right foot, by my pinky and second toe....maybe one day...

2. Do you wear perfume or cologne? What scent(s)?

I have Ralph Lauren's Blue perfume, and The Body Shop's Coconut Milk Body Lotion (this one is fabulous!!!)...I always loved The body Shop's Mango perfume, but sadly they don't make it anymore :(  I like some of the body sprays and lotions from Victoria's Secret as well as Bath and Body Works (oh yeah I have the Pumpkin Pie Paradise Lotion - amazing!!! - but it doesn't look like it's on their site. boo) . Oh and I LOVED the Bath & Body works Le couvent Lemon Verbena Body Splash but it was also discontinued :(

3. How many speeding tickets have you gotten in your life?

um...no comment....okay seriously a few....(so glad this didn't ask how many accidents. haha) - but I think I've only had 1 in the past 7 years until last month when I got TWO within two weeks...*urg*

4. Do you go fishing? Do you like to fish?

I don't go fishing although I did with my grandparents as a kid. I'm more of the *suntan on the boat while everyone else catches the fish* kinda girl....my husband and cousin's husband caught some rainbow trout a few summers ago and we cooked it up (we were camping) in garlic butter and it was AMAZING, which tells yo usomething because I don't like fish.

5. What reality tv shows do you watch?

I really like the Amazing Race...and that's about it. I've watched a few seasons of Survivor. Oh and I can't forget - I LOVE The Bachelor(ette) and America's Next Top Model. (Do American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance count??? If so, then those too lol)

The Me Quiz

Here I am on Sunday afternoon just relaxing with my family - Jonah is napping and Brooklyn is cuddling with her daddy (before they brave some playtime in the snow)...I thought it would be fun to play a little game - do a little quiz. We've all seen these on facebook and when my cousin recently did it, I knew I wanted to as well. So here it goes:

Ocean/Pools: I'm a pool girl, by the ocean. LOL I LOVE the ocean, but absolutely hate having sand stuck to me (unless we are actually building in the sand, then I can work through it). So I enjoy taking a dip in the pool and returning to the lounge chair at the side to resume my tanning, reading, etc.

Cats/Dogs: Tough one actually...we have a cat (*Her* name was Bella Aprillia until we discovered that *she* had...well boy parts *ahem* so now *He* is Mr. Bella Aprillia.) and I love having a cat (though this one has come close to meeting his maker a few times) as they are really independent. You can go away for a few days and leave out water and food and a clean litter box and not worry. Dogs need more....however, I'd really love a dog one day (not now) - my dream dog, a Great Dane. Okay I actually want two - a Great Dane and a Yorkie...how cute would that be. So I guess I don't really have a preference on this one...
Summer/Winter: Summer - though I associate winter with Christmas so I definitely get excited when the weather starts the change....never far from missing the summer heat mind you.
Sugar/Salt: salt - though I never salt my food....but I love salty food (chips mainly). Sweet stuff, not as much and I find it often hurts my teeth.....but I do have a bit of a *candy* sweet tooth - the dentist has made a fortune off me *sigh*
Pen/Pencil: pen - there's nothing quite like finding that perfect pen. Pencil for math, but pen for everything else.
Silver/Gold: Silver - but I am venturing a little bit into having a few more pieces of gold jewelry
Ketchup/Mustard: mustard - mmm mustard
Pants/Shorts: hmmmm...I have NO idea on this one. Depends on my mood I guess.
Math/Art: Both - I had an awesome math teacher in grade 10 who really helped me find my appreciation for math. As a result it became my favorite core subject (theater was my FAVE). But I also always enjoyed art
Sunrise/Sunset: sunset - I try not to be awake for the sunrise, though I'm sure it's really beautiful. LOL
Chocolate/Vanilla: definitely vanilla
Big Mac/Whopper: oh the whopper...actually they recently had the Angry Whopper - oh.my.word. DIVINE! Seriously delicious....
Apple Juice/Orange Juice: orange
Facebook/MySpace: Actually I'm on both, but always forget about Myspace so for the sake of this *quiz* it's facebook. Speaking of Facebook - have you changed yours to Pirate English? If not, try it - sooo funny! Scroll down to the bottom of your facebook page. On the left you'll see *English* (or whatever language you have it set to) - click and when the box appears choose *English:Pirate* - hilarious...even funnier when it tells me to *cast the wench a bottled message* in reference to my mother. HAHA
Boxers/Briefs: If I had my choice I'd say boxer briefs are where it's at (no, not on me...my husband) but Brent prefers Boxers (you were curious, admit it lol). I went through a Boxer phase myself (in Junior High), but have to admit I much prefer a cute pair of briefs :)
Rain/Shine: I LOVE the sunshine...But I also LOVE the rain, though not in excess.
Chips/Popcorn: Chips - but I do enjoy a nice bowl of popcorn once in a while, but it has to be seasoned with loads of butter.
Plane/Boat: Plane... to get to my destination faster....but boat for a nice lounging around kind of day or a cruise (naturally)
Walk/Drive: Depends where I'm going - I do enjoy a nice walk though...
Movie/Play: Play...I love a good movie, but being able to go to the theater is a real treat. Something I wish I did more. 
Money/Love: Why can't I have both? LOL Okay okay, truthfully... Love....money is fun, don't get me wrong, but not nearly as fun if you don't have someone you love to share it with. While I may be hoping for a lottery win (I'm not greedy, $30 million would suffice) I'd rather have Brent without the money, than the money without Brent. But back to my first reply - ideally I'd get to have both :D
Breakfast/Dinner: Dinner...I don't particularly care for breakfast foods nor do I seem to eat early enough to be considered *breakfast*.But my best friend growing up LOVES breakfast - in fact she loves it so much she goes to bed *excited* and anticipating breakfast the next morning.
Truth/Dare: Dare....I'm one of those *always honest* kind of people, so dare would probably be more interesting. Well actually maybe Truth would. LOL
Contacts/Glasses: Both
Root Beer/Dr. Pepper: Actually Dr. Pepper (thanks to Brent for that one!) though our daughter LOVES Root Beer.
Mud/Jell-O Wrestling: Doesn't matter as long as I win :D
Skiing/Boarding: Neither...I'm a self proclaimed lodge bunny who would rather be making lunch for the group. Need a personal chef for your ski vacation - I'm your girl! (I'd watch kidlets too!!!!)
Diamond/Pearl: Diamonds are a girl's best friend...
Phone/In-Person: Definitely in person.
Oldest, Middle, Youngest, or Only Child: Youngest

We Love Colors - With Giveaway

                                                           

Am I ever excited about this company! I am constantly trying to find tights for my daughter (okay and myself, it's true). I love variety and of course quality, but haven't really ever found THE place to get them. Until now...

We Love Colors is seriously THE place for tights...for children, women, and men -  And although they specialize in opaque tights, their product selection also includes dancewear, performancewear, gloves, socks, and more. They have truly thought of everything - every color and style imaginable (by the way as a side note - it's really difficult for me to spell color without the *u* - but for the sake of this post and company, I will do it. See the sacrifices I make - it's a tough life. LOL). 

Laura from We Love Colors sent two pairs of their tights to review - a red and white striped pair and a solid cream pair. I was so anxious for these to arrive in the mail and may have even let out a squeal of delight when they did.

I was a little unsure when I opened them as the first thing I noticed is they don't have heels (as in a reinforced heel). I think I just assume they have to in order to have a good fit.....let's disprove this misconception right now, shall we? Check out all their photos on their website to see just how perfectly these tights fight. And read the many testimonials as well to see just how many people have been THRILLED by their We Love Colors purchase. The striped tights were big on Brooklyn, but trust me - it's not a *tights* problem....it could very well be that my 5 year old is more the size of a 3 year old and I therefore should have gotten the size smaller. But oh man...were they cute!!! We just threw on a pair of her tall boots and away we went (she was INSISTENT she wear them). I love them....and am seriously so excited to add to her collection (and start one of my own). As for the *no heel* issue - I've come to the conclusion that I actually think it's a great feature...your feet (or your child's) won't grow out of the predetermined foot portion of tights - meaning, yes, they will last longer! And that can only be a good thing! 

I continue to be floored every time I browse their site - Their affordable pricing ($5-$10 per pair) and awesome colour options are like no other. Some other fun tights I've stared longingly at are the kids Fishnet Pantyhose, Women's Patterned Tights (oh I'm in trouble), the Women's Knee Highs, and the Lurex Glitter Fishnets, among many many others (like the Vertical Striped thigh highs I just now happened upon). Think of the fun you could have! In addition, if you are plus sized - don't let that stop you! We Love Colors has a fabulous selection of plus size tights as well.

There is so much to choose from - and as you browse their site you'll see it's nearly impossible to make a decision...

Monday Mingle...on Tuesday :)

Not only did I miss Monday Mingle last week *sigh* but I am a day late this week...AND I am also not on video yet. So, I will make preparations for next week to be on video..For now I hope reading it is equally as enjoyable.

Here's my Monday Mingle :)

1. Someone tells you that you have the whole day off and gives you $1,000 to do as you please. What do you do?

 Ooo, the WHOLE day off?? That would be divine...It would actually be pretty difficult to decide. In so many ways I would love a whole day to myself....and in so many other ways I'd love to spend the day with just Brent....I suppose the great thing is I could really have both...so here's what I would do :) A friend of mine told me that when she was in university, one of her professors told her class that his wife kept a trunk full of gifts - and every so often when she would pass someone that looked like they were having a difficult day or just needed a pick me up, she would pass them a gift. I've always loved this idea and have wanted to do something similar. So first on my list would be to take a portion of the money and stock up on some fun gifts for *random acts of kindness*. I would buy myself a nice pair of lulu's (would be my first pair!!!) - as they are currently high on my wish list (as in #1). I would indulge in a fabulous side by side massage with my darling husband - ideally it would be my aunt Carla and my cousin, Kari who would do the massages. And I think honestly a nice dinner with Brent. Oh AND I would jump over to Toys R Us or Walmart and stock up on games to play as a family.....and  a few items of clothing for Brent and I (trust me, my kids have enough...besides the day is about me remember. lol) :) 

2. Who would play you in a Lifetime movie about yourself? Oo this is a good one...I'm not entirely sure actually. Perhaps Alexis Bledel or maybe Jennifer Love Hewitt?? I have been told I look like Sally Field when she was younger....and when Kelly Clarkson was on American Idol I had many people comment on our similar characteristics and mannerisms.....it would kind of fun actually to have a Lifetime movie made - as long as I had creative license to oust certain parts. LOL

 

3. We're in the technology age. What is your favorite technological innovation? What one do you think is just useless? Well considering I don't have a cell phone (can you believe it!!!) it's not obviously one of my favorites. I do love the computer and the way it helps network people from all over...helps me keep in touch, though I have to be honest, there's nothing quite like a handwritten card or letter. But I think my favorite technology innovation is movies....so the video camer/video machines....the ability to create movies and such and curl up and fall into a whole different world for a while is something I've always enjoyed. I rarely even go to the movies, and renting them is also a rarity in our house.....but I LOVE when I get the chance. :) I don't know that I think any of the inventions are completely useless - it seems we can turn anything into a necessity, though I will say this...I wish they would quit making new video machines and just perfect the ones we have...I'm happy with VHS and DVD - let's make them as great as possible so we don't render all the stuff we currently have useless....

 

4. What is your favorite funny childhood memory? My Grandma used to own a hotel in Ferintosh, Alberta. It was a regular occurance to get together with cousins and aunts, etc...and just enjoy time together and help Grandma with her duties (well the aunts did - us kids just played!). I remember riding around on bikes with my cousin, Radelle playing cops and robbers. We were about 7-8 I think. We *parked* at a retirement home as part of our game and were sitting there chatting when all of a sudden a hallogen light that had been leaning against the outside fell and shattered. Seriously - we had NOTHING to do with it....Out came a sweet old lady wondering what had happened (I wonder now if they were watching us - I can't imagine they could have heard this light break??). We were so flustered and embarrassed and trying to convince this lady we did not break the light but that we would clean it up. She agreed and so we swept it up. Then we asked if there was anything else they needed help with....and they put us to work...wiping, dusting, and vacuuming. Afterwards she offered to pay us. My cousin, Radelle - clearly much more generous than I was at that age lol - was insistent they not pay us - consider it service. Apparantly she was waiting for me to jump on board and confirm that we did not need nor expect any compensation for helping out. We were happy to do it (and we were). But I never did....I kind of left Radelle on her own little island of service. haha...But we only took half the money this sweet lady was offering....anyways, this story makes me laugh and smile....and I almost wish we had made it a tradition to go help out there everytime we visited the hotel.

5. What is/was your favorite Kool-Aid/Jello flavor? One you hated? I love Jell-O. Period. All flavours...but my favorite is probably raspberry....check out my cooking blog HERE for a fabulous Jell-O recipe that is sooo scrumptious, and pretty :) (and easy - sets in ONE HOUR!!!)
